We currently have four teams based in the south west in the NPFL, only MFM FC, who plays their home matches at the agege Township stadium is doing well, they are currently 2nd on the log, with 40 points, sunshine stars of akure, former continental representative in the CAF champion league are sitting on the 17th position with 27 points from 24 matches. The newly promoted Remo stars of sagamu owned by billionaire kunle soname are currently swimming in relegation waters, they are 19th on the table with 26 points from 24 matches.
But the most surprisingly out of them all is shooting stars of Ibadan formerly IICC, this is the south west most loved club, my father, uncles were all strong fans for this club.. They were the pride of South West in football, they were nicknamed oluyole warriors. Shooting stars was the first club to win the FA cup on club basis in Nigeria in 1971. Shooting Stars is one of the most decorated clubsides in Nigeria. 3SC won the first edition of CAF Cup, defeating the Nakivubo Villa of Uganda 3–0 in the finals at the Lekan Salami stadium after the first leg ended goalless. They won the African Cup Winners' Cup in 1976, becoming the first Nigerian clubside to win an international trophy. They have won the Nigerian premier League five times, they won it in 1976, 1980, 1983, 1995, 1998.
But today, the darling team of Ibadan people and South West in general is on the verge of being relegated the second time in their history. They are currently languishing at the bottom of the table same points with Remo stars but with a inferior goal difference.
Both sunshine stars and shooting stars are owned by their respective state governments, MFM is owned by mountain of fire ministries while Remo stars is owned by kunle soname, owner of bet9ja.
I don't know if I'm supposed to add ABS FC, abubakar bukola saraki FC, owned by the Senate president, they are based in ilorin.
Sunshine stars appointed former ex super eagles coach as their manager on April 25 but resigned five days ago after only just spending 46 days in charge of the team. It's rumored that he resigned due to working conditions at the club. They are currently being coached by an interim manager, akin olowokeere.
Earlier this year, players of the club protested non payment of their salaries and sign on fees
"According to the protesters, the government is owing them up to 13 months and 6 months salary arrears for the staff and players as well as sign on fees for the players"

i think part of the problem affecting the club is lack of good remuneration for both staff and players, ever since their former chairman, Mike idoko left the club, they have been struggling in the NPFL, Mike idoko was the chairman when sunshine stars were in the semi final of the CAF champion league in 2012 and also semi final of the CAF confederation cup in 2011.
Shooting stars FC also appointed coach kadiri ikhana as their manager at the beginning of last season but left his post due to the differences between him and the general manager of the club, rasheed balogun, it was believed that rasheed balogun wanted a coach he could control and was not happy with the N1.2 million that ikhana was collecting per month. Gbenga ogunbote was later re appointed and he saved them from relegation last season. He later left, veteran fatai amosun, an Oyo state indigene was later re appointed for a second stint at the club but it has not been rosy for him ever since. Dimeji lawal is the current team manager of the team. While Mr Gbolagade Busari is the Executive Chairman, of the club.
Shooting stars were formidable when it was well managed, chief taiwo ogunjobi was the chairman while coach onigbinde was the team manager.
In may this year, some players complained about non payment of their salaries but has been the story every season for shooting stars FC, 2015 /2016, season, now 2016/2017 season..

These players can't perform magic, they recently lost scandalously at home to FC ifeanyi Utah 0-3. That annoyed the Ibadan fans.
There was a time, a big fan of the club, otunba akin alabi, the owner of nairabet wanted to buy club but the government of oyo state refused to sell

Now i cannot say categorically that selling 3SC will lead to proper management of the team because of what is currently happening to Remo stars, I have traveled to sagamu twice to watch Remo play, first the condition of the pitch in gateway stadium sagamu is very bad, I saw little investment in the club compared to other privately owned team like ifeanyi ubah FC, it was as if the club only exists as a commercial enterprise for bet9ja, they were not that active in the transfer window, most of their players were inexperienced except for their captain Victor mboama. Although they played good football and created most chances but they lack the quality strikers to covert those chances to goals. Although they have tried in trying to get sagamu people to watch the match in the stadium through various enticing packages but most have been left disappointed after watching away team pick three points in almost all their matches in sagamu.
Something needs to be done to save, South West used to be the power house of football in Nigeria, first Bank, Abiola babes, stationary stores of lagos, leventis United and a host of others.
Do you think government should handover, control and management of the team to private investors? Or do you think government should continue to run the club in the south west? Rivers United is run by the river state government, kano pillars by kano state government. Plateau United by Plateau government. And these clubs don't have problems of non payment of salaries.
Why always South West government owned clubs?
