Tbh, the standard of education in the South west has fallen. And i think this is partly due to unrealistic free education in most states in the South West. . Free education should be completely scrapped in both primary and secondary schools in the south west. As long as government keeps paying wassce fees on behalf of the students in the public schools then we shouldn't expect any improvements in South west wassce exams. The wassce fees should be used instead to equip these schools
Most students no longer read, parents don't buy books, all they do is provide for school uniform, hoe and cutlass (traditional secondary school admission requirements)
Most of these students dont even have chairs and tables, the parents have the impression that government should provide everything.
Ogun state government held an education summit recently in abeokuta to address some of these issues
These were some of the resolutions reached at the summit
1. There is the need for the State Government to set up her own Education Trust Fund that would assist the Government in the delivery of its qualitative and affordable education with unbridled access by indigent students.
2. The State Government should establish a Tertiary Admission Monitoring Committee to monitor the application and admission of Ogun State indigenes to tertiary institutions, thus, taking full advantage of admission opportunities available to the State and her qualified candidates across board.
3. TETFUND allocation in the State should be directed at projects that would add value to education at the tertiary level.
4. The State Government is enjoined to set up Examination Ethics Group to monitor Computer Based Test centres and other Examination venues to ensure that all forms of sharp practices, irregularities and examination malpractices are eliminated.
5. The State Government should re-position the provision of education using critical ICT skills for teaching, learning, examination, reviews and other deliverables.
6. Emphasis must now be placed on skills acquisition in our schools to improve the State education advancement and enhance mass acquisition of knowledge and information.
7. Government is advised to put in place industrial-driven vocational training and to properly equip our technical colleges to fast-track skills acquisition and make graduates from that sub-sector readily employable.
8. Trainees in our Technical colleges should be made to spend thirty percent (30%) in school and seventy percent (70%) in companies on internship.
9. Government is enjoined to explore the provision, expansion of bandwidth for internet connectivity in schools and concepts like “Opon Imo” to fast-track learning and cut education cost.
10. School Board Management Committee (SBMCS) are necessary as a veritable platform in our schools. It affords stakeholders (parents, community/leaders, Old Students etc.) the opportunity to take ownership of education and contribute immensely to its development.
11. In addressing school security, the Government is urged to employ Guidance Counsellors, put in place counselling units and mentoring of students, provision of school perimeter fence, survey of school lands, issuance of C of O’s and putting up Education Security Trust Fund to draw fund for school security.
12. There must be assessment of Teachers periodically while students’ performance should now determine the rating or promotion of the teachers.
13. Government is enjoined to periodically engage in the training and re-training of Teachers as a way of updating their knowledge and enhancement of their competency. Special and attractive package must be earmarked for teachers serving in the rural areas as a way of motivating them.
14. Monitoring and supervision of our schools should improve while quality assurance units and officers must be empowered with training of personnel and provision of project vehicles.
15. Government should increase the 20% budget allocation on yearly basis for the Education Sector to meet the 26% UNESCO benchmark.
16. Government should discontinue the payment of WAEC Examination fee and parents must be made to pay for the examination of their wards. This will raise the level of their responsibility and responsiveness on these children, thus improving performance in our results. Funds saved therefore should be re-directed to other needy areas.
17. Curriculum should be domesticated to meet local needs, and reviewed constantly, while implementation should be paramount.
18. Students with special needs should be given deserved attention while all education stakeholders should be involved in their upbringing and training. They should be referred to as differently able children and not disabled children.
19. Government should ensure that Special needs schools are well equipped with relevant, modern day gadgets, tools and technologies that will aid teaching and learning, professionally trained teachers in required quantum should also be posted to these schools.
20. The Unified Examination should be conducted by the Government only in the third term as against the three terms in a session, but Principals in our public secondary schools be made to conduct the first and second examinations taking into consideration the peculiarity of each school. A reasonable overhead examination cost to be borne by Parents could be introduced for Unified Examination.
21. Competitive entrance test must be extended to all public secondary schools across the State in order to allow for a level free ground for all learners.
22. Administrative policies should be put in place to empower teachers to discipline pupils/students as appropriate.
23. State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology should re-awaken and re-invigorate extra-curricular activities like School debates, membership of/active participation in societies like Boys Scout, Girls Guide, Red Cross, Drama Club etc in our Schools.
24. The State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology’s circular prohibiting the use of mobile phones by pupils/students in our Schools, should be re-issued and properly enforced.
25. Government should invest more in the provision of sporting facilities in our Schools and increase funding of School Sports.
26. Corporate organizations, public spirited individuals, old students associations, etc must be actively involved in the funding of Education via provision of infrastructural facilities, sponsorship of academic and sporting competitions, etc. This is because no Government, irrespective of its benevolence can single-handedly, effectively fund education
27. Parents are charged to be alive to their responsibilities by dutifully checking on their children/wards to prevent them from being initiated into cultism or taking them out if they were.
28. Review of School Curriculum to focus on the State peculiarity without jeopardizing the content of the National Curriculum.
29. The State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology must ensure that entrepreneurship/trade subjects are not only vigorously taught in schools, but provisions must also be made for practical sessions.
30. Government should focus more on Adult and Non-Formal Education, increase funding, access, infrastructural resources for vocational and literacy centres towards building skills for our youths and adults.
