Interesting. Isn't Ifa also Yoruba science or the pinnacle of Yoruba science? Ifa is actually the oracle of the Yoruba race. A divination system that works like a computer, in storing information and bringing together other source of knowledge. For example, Ifa uses combinatorics and permutations in the arrangements of the Odus(signatures) which acts as a variable or memory address. The core of an Odu is made up of bits, I(1) and II(0), where the I shows the flow or existence and II shows the breakage of a flow or non-existence. So therefore, the bits works like the binary switch(on/off). In computer science, when you combine eight bits together, you get a byte. It's the same with Ifa, a byte forms two legs column of the Odu, which means one leg column equals 4 bits and the additional column gives you the complete leg. I I I I I I
I I (You read the Odus from right to left.)
So therefore, one leg column equals (I,I,I,I), this is Ogbe, but when another leg is added with the same odu(I,I,I,I), you get Eji-Ogbe. The Eji meaning two. And it goes on like that with the first sixteen combinations of the Major Odus(Meji). After the sixteen combinations are formed, the permutations of the individual legs are now combined to form the remaining Minor Odus, which then gives you a total of 256 Odus of Ifa. The 256 Odus serves like a database, where within each Odus are hundreds of stories, medicines, and spiritual messages. A basic machine used in displaying the Odus is called Opele, although other tools are used in divination(for example Ikin). A babalawo is expected to learn as much of the stories to be considered proficient. Ifa is just one branch of Yoruba sciences, but It serves as the computer, bringing the remaining sources together. Impressive. I bought a book about Ife opus a few years ago but I've not been able to read everything. I was just able to understand the concept of ori inu, eleda, and ayanmo. And I've been able to add them to my thought process about creation and destiny.

Thanks Oduabachanal , do you know if the 256 ODUS are written and translated anywhere? Eku irole o osoronga... Based on my research, a German university is said to be in the possession of the complete 256 Odu audio recordings. The recordings I believe was done by the late William Bascom and was heavily funded by foreign organisations including the CIA. There is a book series called IFISM, written by a bini man claiming to be the complete Odu, it is a lie and the book is nothing but a stinking front to insult Yoruba Ifa system. Oluwo popoola made the attempt to create volumes of Ifa work based on each of the 16 major Odus. So far, I remember he released the volume one few years back. The book was hardcover, well translated and mad heavy, and like all his books, they are released in the USA. www.amazon.com/Ifa-Dida-Invitation-Divination-VOLUME/dp/0981001319

Stay tuned osoronga, I'm starting a thread soon. I have the pdf copies of some Ifa&Yoruba books( including the Ifism ones), which I will also share. The thread will follow the pattern of the facebook group 'Nigeria Nostalgia' but with Yoruba-Orientation at the core. E se pupo.
