Nigerian defeats world scrabble champion
Olatunde Oduwale of Lagos State on Sunday emerged winner of the 2016 Asaph Zadok National Scrabble Championship with 19 wins and 1,856 points. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that as the National champion, Oduwale was decorated with a green jacket, given a plaque, a trophy and a cash prize of N150,000. Wellington Jighere, the world scrabble champion, who came second with 19 wins and 1180 points, won a cash prize of N100,000. Oduwale defeated the world champion, Jighere with 676 points to become the 2016 national champion. Rex Ogbakpa came third with 17.5 wins and 938 points to take home a cash prize of N50,000. On the state level, Delta State dethroned defending champion, Kano State, to become the 2016 best scrabble state and win N100,000 and a trophy. While speaking , Oduwale attributed his success in the championship to “the Grace of God and consistent hard work”. “There are lots of dedicated scrabble players that have equal opportunities to win as well, but I think God favoured me; so I was lucky and I played well. “Jighere lost his first game today while I won my first game with a very wide margin; he was leading with two games and a cumulative of 1,379. “He lost scandalously on table one with about 250 points and I won on table two with 179 points; so with this, I leaped ahead with the cumulative to win the championship,’’ he said. While presenting the trophies, Hauwa-Kulu Akinyemi, the Director, Federations and Elite Athlete Department, Ministry of Youth and Sports, expressed appreciation to Suleiman Gora, President of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation for developing the game. “I appreciate the president because in spite of the hard times, he was able to put together this championship because of his passion and determination to qualitatively engage the youths. “On behalf of the ministry, I am here to say thank you to him, encourage him and urge him to continue to partner with others to promote the sport,’’ Akinyemi said. Gora, in his remarks, thanked God for a successful championship. “When you start something and you get it done successfully you thank God; it was a wonderful outing. “It is my ambition to make sure that whatever programmes we plan for the year, we follow them through,” he said. Gora said the next thing in line for the federation was to prepare seriously for the world championship scheduled to hold in France in October. Source

CNBC Africa’s Entrepreneur of the Week Show Features Inspiring Nigerian Women in Business
The slot has featured the business stories of Ibukun Awosika of the Chair Centre, Nike Ogunlesi of Ruff ‘n’ Tumble, Nike Davies-Okundaye of Nike Art Gallery, Bukky George of Health Plus, Lisa Folawiyo of Jewel by Lisa, Tayo Bolodeoku of Hans and Rene, Bolanle Austen-Peters of Terra Kulture, Udo Okonjo of Fine & Country West Africa, Omoyemi Akerele of Lagos Fashion and Design Week, Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola of Wecyclers, Leke Alder of Alder Consulting, Anselm Tabansi of Fahrenheit Hospitality, Sade Awe of the Inner Circle and Funmi Victor-Okigbo of No Surprises. Bella Naija caught up with Didi Akinyelure for more. “As Africans, we need to tell our own story. People are doing exceptional things here in Nigeria and the world needs to hear about them. It’s one thing to read about these movers and shakers in the business community but it helps to be able to visualise what you read. This is where our Entrepreneur slot comes in. We go into these businesses and we see how they work. We feel the passion of the business owners and the commitment of their staff, and share the stories we hear through our platform. The aim of the Entrepreneur slot is to inspire small and medium sized enterprises in Nigeria. We tap into the businesses of these individuals, we get an understanding of their vision and they share the highs and lows of their journey. We ask the questions aspiring Entrepreneurs want to hear, one being the funding question. In Nigeria, a lot of Entrepreneurs are not open to discussing how they got the funds to start their businesses. In many cases, there seems to be a gap in the story but this is what SMEs need to hear. It’s one thing to have a dream and a good plan, and another to have the funds to ignite your dreams. The Central Bank of Nigeria, the Bank of Industry, Federal and State Governments have policies and programmes that are geared towards funding for SMEs. Are these policies being implemented? Are these funds filtering down to the people who need them the most? We hope that by sharing these stories, we are able to play a part in motivating SMEs. The Entrepreneurs featured have gone through challenging times and still found a way out. At the time when many of these people started their businesses, there were no funds or programmes geared towards SMEs. Ibukun Awosika, Founder of the Chair Centre used the little savings she had to complete her first job, and later got high interest funding from her bank. She also rode through the challenge of the furniture importation ban in 2004. Bukky George of Health Plus started small and was later able to raise funding for her Pharmacy business. Leke Alder, started his business with N17.50. Udo Okonjo of Fine & Country West Africa started her real estate business in the midst of a health scare and Tayo Bolodeoku of Hans and Rene, found strength in her small business while facing a personal challenge. If these individuals can do it, so can you”. Source

Olugbenga Babatola becomes mayor of Greenwich London
Nigerian man has become the first elected African mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, South-East London. A 59-year-old Olugbenga Babatola was born in Nigeria but has been living the UK for decades. In 2015, he became the first African to be elected as deputy mayor and served alongside Norman Adam, the current mayor of the community. Babatola will be inaugurated into office as the first African mayor of Greenwich on May 25, 2016 Denise Hyland, the council leader, congratulated Babatola and expressed gratitude to Adam. “Looking around Royal Greenwich there’s much to be proud of. The physical regeneration of our community continues apace, while there are many developments in our economic, social and community life.” “I was determined that we should open the inauguration ceremony to more local people to reflect on the role our community plays in achieving the successes we have enjoyed over the past year. It is also a way to welcome Councillor Babatola to his new role as Mayor, and to thank Councillor Adams for his hard work and service during his tenure,” she said. Babatola was elected by council members at an annual meeting and he will hold the position for a year. He will be acting as an ambassador at public affairs and at civic and ceremonial events. Babatola is also a strong believer in kids and power of the youth. In 2015, when youths in the Royal Borough of Greenwich renovated one of the facilities, Babatola commended them for their contribution to the community. “The young people have worked really hard and to get to this stage is brilliant. “Our children are getting to the point now where they don’t ask what their community will do for them but what are they going to do to support their community. “I think it’s very inspirational and is leading by example so that the younger ones will follow them by seeing their contributions to their community,” he said. We only gave up trading I remember that list that was released by a Ghanaian website about the Nigerians dominating the business sector in Ghana. 7 out of 9 were Yorubas Yea, we rock. We can't help it. I and a friend of mine have been talking about starting a tech company. He wants it in the USA, but I want it in Nigeria. Still trying to convince him that Naija is the place to be, but he doesn't want to even talk about Nigeria talkless of setting foot there unless he has to. Nigeria is the place to own a legit business. Just thinking about the money
