Ibadan — Oyo State is the worst hit by the high burden of malnutrition in the South West zone, a study by the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) in collaboration with the Partnership for Advocacy in Child and Family Health (PACFaH) has revealed. The study revealed that 27% of children under-five in the state are stunted, and 18% of women of reproductive age in the state wishing to practice family planning do not have access. These were part of revelations from a Mentorship Training for Media Champions in Child and Family Health in the South West geo-political zone in Lagos over the weekend. It was attended by 20 journalists working in child and family health in the country. Diarrhoea and pneumonia contribute 10 per cent each to the high Under-5 mortality rate in the South west, the study further showed. A communique issued by the participants stated that sustainable funding and concerted public-private effort towards adequate routine immunisation would not only prevent development of childhood killer diseases (pneumonia and diarrhoea) but also successfully interrupt the transmission of wild polio virus in Nigeria. According to the communique, improving and sustaining intervention through adequate funding, and full implementation of the 2014 National Health Act to enhance Primary Health Care services will help to combat and mitigate the burden of children from pneumonia and diarrhoea in the country. Others are adoption and implementation of the recommendations and guidelines by the United Nations Commission on Life-Saving Commodities, and creation of specific budget line for procurement of the commodities. The same Oyo state was the worst performing South-west state in WAEC I blame Lamidi Adedibu and his political legacy. He and his acolytes reduced Oyo state politics to mere theft and thuggery, and their successful efforts at intimidating the electorate is reflected in the state's uninspiring leadership today: people who believe their votes don't matter won't exercise the necessary oversight to ensure their leaders have vision and energy.

The same Oyo state was the worst performing South-west state in WAEC These are some of the consequences of widespread illiteracy. There should be a way to start an enlightenment campaign to change the mindset of our people. There's obviously a dumbing down process in operation that needs to be challenged. Maybe religion is the purveyor, I don't know but its serious enough to merit attention. We just dey carry last in everything like its going out of fashion. Awo must be weeping wherever he is.

I don't know any religion that cosigns that ooo my brother. This is clearly the state government's fault for not paying attention to the health sector

Honorebu the malnutrition is not due to illiteracy or religion. What the report showed is that for SW the mothers weren't feeding the kids a variety of foods especially amongst five important food groups.Hence the malnutrition and stunting. They weren't getting enough animal products both in terms of milks, cheese, eggs and animal protein. What the states need to do is educate mothers on the importance of the different food groups so that they will feed their toddlers properly and perhaps they can help out by ensuring each household have some sort of cheap animal protein to rear via chickens and rabbits.

This is clearly the state government's fault for not paying attention to the health sector It has a lot to do with education and religion my brother. Malnutrition is not a result of poor hospitals or failing health sector. The most basic education will tell a woman that one boiled egg of 30naira a day and ordinary dry fish in soup will supply a good chunk of protein needs of a child instead of pumping the pikin full of eba and ila with ponmo. Its basic knowledge that my children in primary school are exposed to in their "basic science" classes. Also combination3, a very effective family planning drugs cost less than 100naira for a 30day therapy and is available at most pharmacies and chemists but do you know illiteracy and religion would never allow some women go near it? You see a woman who has 5 kids she can't take care of and she's still getting pregnant with the 6th. You ask her and she says "ise oluwa in o...bi o se wu oluwa ni se ola"!! This is a story I relayed here last December when we broached this subject yet the poorest hospital or maternity home screams " e fi eto si omo bibi" all over Yoruba land. Religion particularly radical Islam is on the upswing in Oyo state and osun state and we all should know how that brand views western education. Even some Christian groups frown at family planning. Its not due to any health sector failure anything.

You've just harped on the education angle too. We can now argue whether the govt is doing enough or the people are simply too illiterate to understand. Illiteracy is the problem dear comrade. If you stay in Nigeria, pls pay a visit to hospitals and see these info boldly written on big papers and pasted all over hospitals yet people still want to blame govt for folks who refuse to include eggs and fish in their children's diet?

And it turned to whispers of "Omo yeeboe to lo fe yi o ready ati pon Omo"? Illiteracy and religion all at play at once. I don't like going near religion in public discussions because I know how touchy folks can be when it comes up but trust me, I'm not bashing for bashing sake. Except you want govt to start a food distribution centre, I don't know what else government can do about this issue because right from ante natal, women are taught the essentials of nutrition for them, their children and family planning yet this issue keeps coming up. The simple conclusion is that they don't see the importance and its illiteracy that prevents them from doing that and religion does enough to keep folks illiterate. Well if govt will do more, I won't mind as long as these bad statistics ceases to be our lot in Yoruba land.

Truth be told, humans are reluctant to change. The onus is on the government to find out why folks aren't taking up the advice...how they can partner with relevant faith based organisations etc to eradicate poor nutrition problems.I don't deem it as solely an illiteracy or religion issue because even in the west where folks are educated about proper nutrition they still don't eat properly. They just might not have an issue of protein problems since many of our diets are high in animal products but many of us don't enough veggies and so forth.Btw the stats on poor nutrition for SW wasn't only for Oyo and Osun....Oyo case is just higher.
