Poem to my Unborn Child (2)Dear unborn child I know you're going to be a boy Daddy's little boy They say plans are an invitation to disappointment But I've got plans for you Cos I know what you'll never be is a disappointment You're going to be the flesh of my flesh Blood of my blood, And bone of my bones Daddy's little boy They say education is the passport to the future For tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today So I’d make sure you get the best education up to whatever level Not just classroom education But all facets/types of education Teach you based on black/Africa pride Educate you on black/African history; And what it's to be a black man in this white man's world Devoid of prejudice against other races of people This is a world where people are fickle But whatever stigma you experience It's just the reality you have to live with They say being street smart helps in manoeuvring the real world Like the American flag; Dad earned the stars, stripes, and swag I already made all the sacrifices So you don't need to go through the same experiences I shall pass everything to you Give you the tools to succeed in all endeavours Do you want to play sports? What do you think about football? Score tons of goals for the fun of it at the highest level like Pele? I've got you, daddy's little boy I know you'd be as athletic as I am Teach you how to nutmeg and make folks look confused Show you step-overs, flip-flap, Zidane roulette, and rabona Do you want to be a NBA or NFL superstar? Michael Jordan or Jerry Rice, who do you prefer? Dominate the game of basketball like no one ever did, Catch passes like you’ve got stick ‘em on your hands Whichever you choose, I've got you, daddy's little boy As I unwind from my chronesthesia Into the labyrinth of the future in deep thoughts Thoughts about you and what you would become Solace came forth cos you would be a gift The dream and hope of a father I can’t wait to see you, daddy’s little boy cc: OmoOba , dansoye1 , Honorebu , Interloper , Moffy , Interloper Err, I didn't try the rhyming pattern at all on this one. I used Ben Okri's poem, "A New Dream of Politics", for the structure.

Mama Africa
Amazingly beautiful wouldn’t be enough to qualify you A place where nature meets graciousness and tranquility Resting place for nature with serenity The alpha and omega of humanity All creatures find rest domiciled within your towering frame in effervescence Oh Africa, the cradle of civilization Engrossed in meditation My mind travels through the great migration of Tanzania Imagining how millions of wildlife, Could travel from Ngorongoro through Serengeti all the way to Masai Mara And continue the cycle annually The Sossusvlei Dunes caught my attention and I got lost in my thoughts Puzzled in amazement by your greatness and complexities Incredibly distressed by your labyrinthine allure I could feel the heat within my soul like Nyiragongo Volcano But the Bazaruto Archipelago gave me soothing calmness The journey continued with a view of Victoria Falls; A spectacle to behold Oh Africa, the Spitzkoppe is a perfect get-away spot Walked through its bald granite peaks Envisioned what the Sahara dunes, Mount Mulanje, and Nyika Plateau would look like Wondered what the Sungbo Eredo would look like today; If its legend hadn’t been left in ruins Stood still and stared into the sky Would if it have added another landmark to the greatness of the African landscape? Like the Pyramids of Giza and Sphinx The two architectural masterpieces that defined the eminence of our ancestors Their lost civilizations that shaped and defined humanity, higher science, and astrology Stared down and saw the startlingly beautiful Fish River Canyon To my right were the Lower Zambezi and its massive wildlife sanctuary; And the spectacular channels for wandering animals Further east of that, the Kilimanjaro stood, In its greatness, compelling beauty and mystery festooned in clouds Oh Africa, back to sanity, from meditation Dream of a new beginning New beginnings that will see you take your place As the continent that stands apart from the rest A new dawn and a renaissance Wake up, sleeping giant Her Highness , ajanaku , Honorebu

I'm in awe! Check out line 10, I think you meant "all the WAY to Masai Mara". This is not a beautiful poem shymmex, it's beyond that. I'm trying to find the right words. You not captured Africa's historical and contemporary beauty, you gave precedence to its beautiful landscape. Better copyright this poem. No joke. Don't lie, you always sound like a history professor. I think you're one history teacher in Ibadan. IrekeOnibudo, I think you'll appreciate this piece.

Shymmex, when we often write beautiful reflection of our love and heart, we underrate it because we fear what others may think. You wrote what you felt and I saw beauty in your words and expressions. I don't give out compliments freely, if you don't know me by now. This is an excellent piece.

The use of Imagery was out of this world. You sounded like a hybrid of JP Clark and Wole Soyinka. Trust me, the art of poetry is innate in you, like football is to Ronaldinho You too much! My only reservation is the piece being more prosaic than poetic. Or should I label it a prosaic poem 'cos that's a type of poetry too? Shymmex baba, you need to infuse more poetic devices into your pieces. I agree with your earlier comment about modern poems not rhyming and so on but I personally love infusing different tools into my pieces to make it look and sound poetic. Poetic in the "conventional" sense of the word. ...thought you wouldn't make reference to Nigeria until I got to Sungbo Eredo. I think you should have used the Osun Oshogbo sacred grove and the Osun river instead...Ijebu man like you! Nice one, baba! I look forward to buying your book of poetry on amazon sometimes in the very nearest future. Guy, you're like a Jack of all trade, master of all!...Sports, history, Economics, International politics, science, Human female anatomy and now Poetry. You too much!

Guy, you're like a Jack of all trade, master of all!...Sports, history, Economics, International politics, science, Human female anatomy and now Poetry. You too much! I like this, my nyggah. Nice critique. I think what I've been writing is more of prose with bits of disjointed rhythm - without that much effects, similes, and abstract comparisons. I'm not really feeling the poems as well cos I haven't been able to convey my thoughts into the right structure, rhythm, and effects that I want. But hopefully, as I keep writing, I'll get a hold of how to do that. I'm learning and reading/studying different patterns online. I just need to keep practising. Lol, I didn't even put the "Sungbo Eredo" cos I wanted to put Nigeria. I had the sphinx and pyramids of giza on my list. And as I was writing the poem - Sungbo Eredo just crossed my mind cos of the comparisons the archaeologists made about it and the sphinx and pyramids of giza. Anyway, I'm trying to write a next poem about Yoruba(land) and I'll definitely include everything in the tourism section that represents the beauty of Yorubaland. Also, I'll post a short rhyming poem about "black woman" tonight...I'll tag you when I do.

Yoruba(land) The land of my ancestors Birthed by Ile Ife our sacred and spiritual fortress Home of the children of Oduduwa Oduduwa, the father of Okanbi The great enigmatic progenitor Olofin Adimula and the Yoruba emperor Divinity in Yoruba pantheon, duke of all dukedoms The forebear of a commonwealth that abhors fiefdoms Whose offspring went forth and built empires, civilisations, and kingdoms
Okanbi sired eight offspring Oranmiyan the great and the conqueror of his siblings Alpha and omega of the kingship in Benin Empire And the architect of the pristine Oyo empire Oyo dialect became the voice of our interactions One who birthed two great empires and civilisations The biovular twins that rose and expanded in statue Conquering all and sundry in longitude and latitude The sundry became a commonwealth of repute Like Anthony Gatto, he juggled them both without dispute Popo founded the kingdom of popo And the kingship became olupopo Orunto the forgotten son, Ajero of Ijero Onisabe of Sabe, Owa Obokun Ajibogun of Ijesa Orangun of Ila, Alara of Ara
The land of the Osun Osogbo sacred grove Where the mangrove forest and gods get in groove IITA forest reserve, Omo-Shasha-Oluwa forest reserve Ikogosi Warm Springs, Idanre hills Osun, Ogun, and Oya rivers Owu falls, Arinta waterfalls Olumirin - Erin Ijesa waterfalls Oranmiyan obelisk stands tall Showing where the mighty walked Olumo rock the fortress that defined Egbas Home of the illustrious and ingenious Ife artists, Whose magnificent artworks left early Europeans in awe Wondering if they're artefacts from Atlantis
Yorubaland, the marriage of the savannah and rain forest Where its people thrive in ingenuity and magnanimity Alluring land that covers an entire coast in Nigeria To the Republic Du Benin and Togo With its people scattered all over black diaspora In exile and via trans-Atlantic slavery But still seek refuge in the commonwealth And the omnipotence of Oduduwa and spirituality that unites us all
