Folks, what do y'all think about Community-facilitated road projects Like residents being the ones funding the fixing of their roads (Not federal roads) And then the government can reduce the tax omohayek Short_Biscuit Her Highness Belmot The problem I see is that any tax relief would provide a major opportunity for fraud. You just know that people eager to dodge taxes will start hugely over-invoicing the cost of repairs - or even claim relief by pretending to "repair" what wasn't broken in the first place.

What about businesses located in the community are they also getting equal tax relief as private or individual resident.

Honorebu, I think that's the best approach, but then it would make our politicians more greedy.

omohayek , But errm the government doesn't have to listen to them and besides the govt will be the ones in charge of the process The residents will just contribute funds Belmot everything will be fixed. Yes they will also get the tax relief But what stops the tax evaders from developing "conneh" with a few well-placed government officials? Has the Nigerian government ever been famous for the rectitude of its workers? I know if I were an underpaid (or worse yet, unpaid) civil servant, I would try to be first in the queue to transfer to a new department like this, where I could make arrangements with tax dodgers to get them X mount of relief for just 10% of what they ought to pay ...

Lol So basically, you think it won't work eh? The principle in itself makes sense, but the problem is the environment in which it must be implemented. In a better-run country, I'm sure it would do well, but not in a "you chop I chop" country like Naija. Until Nigeria has implemented systematic measures to combat corruption, anything that gives government officials more scope for discretion will only breed fraud and theft.
