Electricity Gulps 40 % Of Our Production Cost – MAN
Posted: Dec 23 20
MAN President, Dr. Frank Udemba-Jacobs
The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) said 40 per cent of production cost goes into providing electricity in manufacturing sector.
The MAN President, Dr. Frank Udemba-Jacobs disclosed this at the weekend in Abuja during the presentation of a technical report for the establishment of micro power grid for industrial clusters.
According to him MAN members spend about N73million monthly to generate alternative power.
Presenting the report, the committee chairman, Engr. Reginald Odia, a member of MAN noted that it is unacceptable when other countries enjoy below 10 per cent electricity cost.
Odia said the 154-page report advocates means to provide between 5 megawatts (mw) to 50mw mini-grid for the identified 28 industrial clusters in Nigeria to cushion power blackout.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and MAN had inaugurated a seven-man committee in October to develop a document that will guide government and the private sector players in creating strategies to overcome the epileptic power supply at industries.
The NERC Chairman, Dr. Sam Amadi, who received the report at the Commission’s headquarters, assured it would be presented to the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola.
Amadi said the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), which he described as more of a parliamentary project executor, would need to be reformed to integrate private investors in providing rural electricity.
