I think he's referring to the ridiculous 13% derivation for mineral extraction, which has to come out of the taxes on the declared profits of these mining operations.

Yeah. omohayek, I was referring to the second tweet. Apparently, granite from Oyo state is being used to fill Eko Atlantic, and the Oyo state government is not receiving a dime from it

Yeah. omohayek , I was referring to the second tweet. Apparently, granite from Oyo state is being used to fill Eko Atlantic, and the Oyo state government is not receiving a dime from it It's entirely possible that this is so, depending on how the companies have set up their corporate structures: depending on where the tax advantages lie, you can have child corporation A operating at a loss in one location, providing goods and services to child corporation B which is operating at a profit elsewhere. Such things are always possible when tax-rates differ across jurisdictions; that's the kind of thing the EU levied a $14.5 billion fine on Apple for. Combine the political connections of the likes of Dangote with the corruption and ineptitude of anything federal in Nigeria, and it's easy to imagine the end result in terms of tax avoidance.

Fam, just saw the piece of news below and it got me thinking. The intended exercise prettymuch sounds to me like a 'census' of sorts, and I imagine that the resultant data would more or less give the government some very credible and solid data to work with -- probably more credible than anything a similarly (politically contentious) FG-conducted one could ever achieve. Now, if it's that easy to conduct such an exercise, why then is it proving difficult for the FG to conduct another census since the last 2006 one? Why can't other states embark on a similar exercise, rather than wait on the FG-organized census? I am really eager to see the results/wealth of data that'll be generated from the exercise.

Honorebu , omohayek , Short_Biscuit , .... we all know that Nigeria does not have a gov ernment lol. A country like Canada does a census every 5 YEARS despite their very accurate birth registration, immigration data and death reports, while in the case of the US it is every 10 years. The UN recommends a maximum interval of 10 years for data credibility. To be sincere with you even the 2018 that the Nigerian census was postponed to will not happen.I don't see the census happening anytime soon. Nigeria is VERY VERY UNSERIOUS. Do you know that in a country like South Africa, they have a special allotment for future censuses in their yearly budget, so that b the time the period coes to begin enumeration and other stuff, there won;t be a shrtage of funds? Meanwhile Nigeria is still begging the US, UN and China for money/donations to help them conduct their own census./LOL! Nigerians are also sick people. There is always a MASS MOVEMENT of people every time a census is about to be conducted. That is when you will see truckloads of people travelling from the Southest to the East , SS and North. Why? Because they do not want to be counted as a part of the population of the same states where they make a living and whose resources they put pressure on. They return immediately after the census is completed to continue their parasitic lifestyles after shortchanging their host communities. It is quite unfair tbh. Also worrisome is the massive Number padding that happens in the Northern, SS and Eastern states. the North and SS most especially!. This is Abua-Odual LGA, the local Government area that enumerators from RIVERS state came back to tell us contains 382,000 people!... which Btw is more than the population of Akure local government from that same census. lol Google maps reveal that there is virtually NOTHING there but vast swamps and a string of tiny hamlets. They said this one contains 337,000 people... Ahoada west. This is what it looks like from space. Who is fooling who lol. Mind you, they did this heavy figure inflation in their bid to avoid being "cheated" by the so called majority ethnic groups stralling their south south oyel money, they had to do some really heavy figure jacking. After several local governments were massively rigged up they fell just slightly off (400,000) off Oyo state's population to occupy number 6. Same thing happened in Bayelsa, ETC People most times (Including the international community) concentrate of figure padding from the North, the one that takes place in the south too nko? Don't let me even begin on the Lagos state is 9 million and lesser than Kano one. Nigeria as a whole is just messed up

Very solid insights. At this rate I don't believe we can ever have a truly credible census exercise in Nigeria. it can NEVER Happen. Because the South West is the most populated Geopolitical region in Nigeria. I concur. Our settlement patterns attest to your submission. E.g, I noticed that Oyo and Osun states have so many densely populated towns that I'll like to know their real population. In spite of the wide distance between some of these towns, you still find them so densely populated. E.g Ogbomoso, Iseyin, Saki, Eruwa, Ife, Ilesa, amongst others. Some probably already have close to a million inhabitants while others already have more than that. I think the last census showed Osun as having the highest number of towns with significant populations in the country.

I think the last census showed Osun as having the highest number of towns with significant populations in the country. Considering that the SW is home to the number 1 or 2 group in the country (depending on whether you lump Hausas and their Fulani masters together as one ethnic group even though Naija and their Ava Cadavra methods is the only place in all of WEST and CENTRAL Africa where this aberration happens) Very funny, right next door in Niger republic where both groups are also present, they are never merged for any statistical purpose. Nothing like "Haoussa-Peul" or "Haoussa-Foulani" over there o. f you go to Niamey and say that, they will look at you funny. When you ask Northerners in Nigeria why they do this, they would say because most Fulanis in Northern Nigeria now speak Hausa, #NewsFlash... most Fulanis in Niger also now speak Hausa! Most Fulanis in Senegal now speak Wolof, most Fulanis in Mali now speak Bambara the lingua franca of that country. They would then say because many Fulanis have intermarried with Hausas and vice versa liiiike lol , is that even a reason? Fulanis all over West and Central Africa have ALL intermarried with the dominant local populations of the places where they have settled, except the nomads who still identify as nothing but Bororo, which is the exact same scenario in Nigeria. Fulanis in Taraba and Adamawa states on NGR who have mostly nomadic origins are so freaking proud of their origins, and do not self identify as anything else. Besides, who doesn't know that most WA Societies are patriarchies, and your pop's ethnicity determines yours? Yet the whole of Nigeria is buying into their ataché nonsense, like they are the only two ethnic groups in the country with independent histories and origin but interrelated history. Rubbish, Why is there no Hausa-Kanuri, who have infact been together and related much longer with each other before the Fulanis came? Anyways: The Southwest also contains the highest number of non-natives of any region in the country. There is no tribe in that Nigeria that can boldly say that they do not have entire families of people living somewhere in the South West, be it Ibibio or Edo or Hausa or Fulani or Gbagyi or Idoma or Egbira of Ibo or whatever. The region is also experiencing the fastest population growth rate from immigration in the country, and that is already discounting the natural population growth rate from birth, that is already a constant. South Westerners don't seem to have a zeal for Nigerian politics unless a Yoruba candidate is involved. Many of them didn't even register or collect their PVCs (mind you, the west had the lowest collection rate in the entire country, I doubt it was even up to 60% collection rate in some states like Ogun and Oyo..... lol I just checked, collection rate in Ogun was 40%!) , yet the SW was still the second largest voting bloc in the country after the North West, a Zone where the local councils and traditional rulers were involved in the registration and giving out process of the cards, and they made sure absolutely every Tom, Dick and Harry got it. Those states all had over 95% collection rates!) It shows you just how populated the South West is. Look at the active GSM lines from the Phone companies and the NCC for example where the SW had by FAR the highest numbers, even for so called poor states like Osun.... Abeg post t again let us analyse am abeg. I remember how in 2006 so many houses and families in Western cities were complaining that the enumerators never got to their abodes, and never counted them. Don't even mention those in the villages who reported that they never even saw any census official in their villages. That is what happens when the FG Short Funds enumerators in the West and makes sure the bulk of the budgeted funds go to Northern states like every ther project carried out by the Nigerian state, where every hamlet wa counted including nomadic kraals where they simply ask the maigidas how many children he has... Some say 20 and there is nothing the enumerators can do but record it as 20, since their harem of wives are simply ba-shiga. post that cellphone data abeg.

Here it is: I too have observed what you said about SW/Yorubas not coming out in their numbers to vote in elections. We all witnessed this during the last elections where the region posted some of the lowest voter turnout (though to our credit, we also had the least incidence of rigging relative to other regions).

Nigeria as a whole is just messed up The fundamental problem is that Nigeria uses population to determine both federal allocations and political power, which gives overwhelming incentives to inflate the numbers. The day federal allocations are abolished and the former southern regions get an effective veto in the senate is the day Nigeria will be ready for a proper census, but not until then. My own feeling is that there's nothing intrinsically good or bad about having a larger or smaller population, and what matters is how that population is doing economically, educationally, health-wise and so on. Countries like Denmark (5 million) and Norway (4 million) are much better places to live than Nigeria with its 120+ millions, and they also have far greater international influence, let alone Australia (25 million) or Canada (36 million). That we are even arguing over which part of Nigeria has the largest number of poor and under-educated people is just another indicator of how broken a country Nigeria is.
