Founder, Centre for Value and Leadership, Prof Pat Utomi, has said indigenous food producers should be encouraged to make their products meet world standards. To meet the demand for processed food, he said producers should modernise their technology, and improve their marketing activities and brand building. Utomi spoke at the just-concluded Food Bext West Africa Exhibition in Lagos. He said: “It is my view that if we focus on the strategy of processing what we produce and there is a clear national strategy, corporate strategy will key into it and use it as a great advantage to help drive the economy of this nation.” Earlier at the opening of the AgrikExpo, Chairman of Venus Processing and Packaging Limited (VPPL) Otunba Christopher Tugbobo, said: “I am very happy to be a part of this venture because Sympli proves that Nigeria is capable of doing new things in agriculture that can help reduce our dependence on oil and gas. “Sympli is produced 100 per cent locally by Nigerians for Nigerians and this gives me hope as it creates much needed employment, helps reduce post-harvest losses and gives Nigerians a home grown brand in the frozen food segment that we can all be proud of.’’ Sympli is the brand name foods produced by VPPL, which is a part of the PRIMLAKS Group. The locally farmed, processed and packed Sympli products, which include ‘Yam Fries’, ‘Yam Cubes,’ Plantain ‘Dodo’ and Plantain Chips, are delivered in ready-to-cook state for frying, steaming or baking. thenationonlineng.net/utomi-encourage-food-processers/

Sure feels sad that despite Africa having a lot to give to the world more on organic foods platforms and healthy foods, we have sadly not being able to develop nor tap effectively into the global food processing industries and reap the very best of income and of cos reduce unemployment among our people. I often wonder with the high youth demography we have in Africa especially the student communities, they are actually the subset of the demography that tend to patronise canned foods the most. if you take a walk along any big grocery shops, most countries are fully represented by their foods and Africa with a population of 1.1 billion people is no where to be found along the aisle. if there is any area of agriculture i would like to deep my hands in, food processing and packaging will definitely be number one! Omo Oba Jobitex tried in the 80's with his company to redefine food processing but somehow business never went far, i recall i used to take canned moi moi, jollof rice and sardines to school, was in the boarding house and such a big delight among a lot of students back then . . . . if the business did no die am sure he would have being representing us in this international foods malls. i really do wonder what it will take for us to have our own canned Ewa agonyin, moi moi, ogbono and other native soups . . . . .something i hope to God i can do in the nearest future. I really give it to the guys in PRIMLAKS groups. . . . . .sky definitely big for all now or later

Encourage canned foods while the rest of the health world is trying to deviate people from canned foods?
Canned food has a large amount of sodium, which is unhealthy to begin with.
We should be encouraging farmer's markets and agriculture.

I don't know if the west would allow our canned foods thrive in their environment. Will they trust us to maintain the highest standards of hygiene and sanitary conditions at our factories? Why not we focus on our core advantage first?? That is produce enough agric products to sustain us and the rest for exports?? When we start playing big in that league, then we can veer into processing for export.
