Ogun State To Enforce Physical And Urban Planning Laws
The Ogun State government says it will begin the enforcement of its Physical and Urban Planning laws to bring sanity to the current impunity in building by residents across the state.
The State Commissioner for Physical and Urban Development, Mr Adebola Adeife, handed down the threat after officials of the ministry sealed off about 10 illegal structures in Ota, Ewekoro and Ifo areas of the state.
He, however, asked residents and property owners to build right and ensure appropriate documents and approval were obtained before embarking on building their structures
In the State, illegal structures are everywhere, although they were offshoot of the failure of government agencies saddled with the responsibility of giving policy direction to building and development.
This no doubt has hampered planning for social infrastructure, but having realised this, the state government seems to be swinging into action
Buildings sealed by the ministry include business premises, warehouse, churches and residential buildings.
The Commissioner, however, assured genuine structure owners of government’s continuous assistance in getting approved building plans and other documents, saying that the era of impunity is gone
But while government is talking about due process in ensuring organised and controlled development, issue of corrupt officials who aid and abet this process should be addressed.

Thank God. People have been building anything any how all over that state. It's like the state has no urban planning department at all. Prevent people building until they meet certain standards. It's better than having to demolish what they have spent money on. Don't let the state be cornered into the demolition option. Plan residential estates, parks, commercial areas and industrial areas now. If anyone needs land to build a house, give them options in the residential estate areas and so on. Ota is becoming a disaster, so is the Redeem camp area. Planning reduces wastage produced by single minded thinking and action. Seperating residential areas from commercial areas help with order, maintenance and neatness. Residential areas are having traffic problems now because shops are everywhere in Lagos where people can't walk or take public transport to the shop nearby. They have to drive there and park on the side of the road, turning a two lane road into one lane road. Plan and prevent disorder before it's too late. Ogun state should be planned as a well spaced and organised surburban option to the Lagos chaos.
