When I say that Buhari is a statist who understands nothing about economics or business, some people might think I'm being unfair. But what else can one take news like this for except as proof of the man's complete economic illiteracy and inability to learn from past failures? So, when the entire country was busy waiting on Buhari to announce his cabinet, this hare-brained scheme was what he was busy occupying himself with? As if the atrocious history of Nigeria Airways wasn't enough of a lesson! God help Nigeria with leaders like this!

This can't be real. In 2016 he wants to setup a government airline?
This must be a hoax or something.
Haven't we learnt that government are useless at running anything? Use those funds to buy more airplanes and drones for our military. Defense is goverment's primary responsibility.
And while he is at it, privatize our refineries and NNPC itself. Let's get the efficient management of the private sector.

It may not be a bad idea if it's some sort of subsidiary arrangement where for example, Qatar airways runs the national carrier and they pay the country some fees.
To get preferred access to our population then they have to maintain the same standards as they do with their own branded airlines and also be open to competition from other airlines.
I can rally round that arrangement.

I see no reason in the man's background for such optimism - anything other than a government-run, government-financed parastatal would go against Buhari's mindset.

Buhari's utterances and mindset clearly puts him at odds with what I wrote. But a glimmer of hope is his recent trip to the middle east. I just pray he is learning free market economics from his Islamic brothers. Hope he opens his eyes to the marvels created in the deserts of Doha and Dubai. Even Saudi is gradually dropping their enmeshed socialist policies.
