The federal government has inaugurated a committee to prepare a roadmap for the development of the solid minerals sector.
The 17-man committee to be headed by Professor Ibrahim Garba and co-chaired by Professor Siyan Malomo is to produce a 25-year action plan for the transformation of the solid minerals sector.
The document is to contain a short-term of 24 months, mid-term of 10 years and long-term of 25 years.
Giving the term of reference, the minister of solid minerals, Fayemi Kayode, said that the committee is to identify hindrances to the development of mineral resources in Nigeria, pathways to overcome such barriers, prioritise the activities and provide the time frames for all activities. They are to create models and scenarios for successful implementation and monitoring of activities, and develop a consensus strategy for buy-in by all stakeholders in the industry, among others.
The minister said that the committee is at liberty to identify sub-sectional activities along the mineral value chain that will enhance the rapid development of the industry and charged them to face the assignment with passion and commitment because it is critical.
On his part, the minister of state for solid minerals, Hon Abubakar Bawa Bwari, in his closing remarks implored the committee members to put the interest of the nation ahead of any pecuniary interest to produce a document that would stand the test of time.
The chairman of the committee, thanked the ministry for giving the committee the opportunity to serve the nation in that capacity and pledged the determination of the members to take the responsibility very seriously. He stated that they would do their best, carry all along and discharge the responsibility given to them within the time frame.
