Ikogosi has been a center of tourist attraction in Ekiti State due to the presence of Ikogosi Warm Spring Resort. At Ikogosi resort, the warm spring flows alongside the cold spring with each of the spring retaining its thermal properties which had mapped out the resort as a centre of attraction for foreign and indigenous tourists.
According to oral tradition, the springs were wives of the same husband who turned into water springs in the bush due to their consistent rivalry and fighting. While the cold spring signified the cold tempered wife, the hot spring signified the hot tempered wife even as their husband represented the surrounding hilly areas.
The warm spring was later discovered to have curative properties which cured strange sicknesses and diseases, a situation that led the locals to worship the water.
However, the small quiet town located in Ekiti West Local Government area of Ekiti was enlivened again as InVcap, an African-focused private equity firm in Nigeria and Canada, set up Splash World Park to complement the potentials of Ikogosi Warm Spring Resort.
The park, which contains multi-purpose water park and recreational centre is primarily set up to promote physical activities among Nigerians and ease off stress after the day’s hectic events.
Tourists and natives can also utilize the park for excursions, vacations, summer, birthday and anniversary celebrations.
In his address, the Director of InVcap Corporation, Arch Olusola Oyelade, described Splash World as an excellent inducement to physical activity adding that outdoor environment was the right place to burn off steam.
According to him, “Promoting healthy diets and physical activity helps to reduce not only obesity, but also the risks related to hypertension, heart disease, diabetes and certain forms of cancer.”
He added that leisure activities make physical exercise interesting and enjoyable thereby facilitating bonding between friend and family members.
Oyelade, who is also Chairman of Casa Consult Limited, added, “More educators, architects and designers are embracing the ideas that outdoor play- space provides chances for the highest level of development and learning which can also serve as a place for investigation, exploration and social interaction.”
On her part, the founding Partner/Chief Executive Officer at InVcap, Mrs Olutoyin Oyelade, said people who exercised for 20 minutes once a week were significantly less likely to fall sick than those who do not exercise.
She said that by participating in community activities and surrounding themselves with family and friends, social people are four times less likely to get cold than those who are more isolated, based on a study.
Oyelade said, “Medically aerobic exercise like deep water running, swimming and brisk walk for about 150 minutes a week has been scientifically proven to keep one fit and healthy.
“These forms of exercise when done 150 minutes a week translates to about 30 minutes in five days.”
This, she said, increases life expectancy as science confirmed that regular physical activity reduces the risk of developing or dying from some of the leading causes of illness and death.
“Every time sedentary people walk a mile, they add 21 minutes to their life, saving society money in medical and related costs. Every hour you spend exercising increases your life expectancy by two hours. People in a regular exercise programme at age 75 have a lower death rate over the next few years than similar groups of sedentary people.”
Oyelade also explained that part of the vision of InVcap is to boost physical activities and health, adding that it is a visible missing link in the life of an average Nigerian.
She expressed concern over the low level of physical and recreational activities among Nigerians.
In his presentation, the Project Engineer for Splash world, Mr Adebisi Ademola Babatunde, said that the park contains a restaurant which serves local and continental dishes stressing that visitors could use the environment for movie and photo shot.
“We are fully ready, all the rides are ready, you can see the nails, water slides, spiral rides, pools, lazy river, children’s water house, elephant slides, raining mushrooms and art gallery.
“The safety of children is assured as they socialize among themselves while learning to increase their visual reasoning and energizing their body apart from exercising the body combined with fun,” Babatunde said.
