Gunmen on Sunday invaded the Ishawo area of Ikorodu, a Lagos suburb, and abducted nine persons. The attack, the latest onslaught by militants against riverine communities in Lagos and Ogun States, was said to have occurred while worshippers were returning from church services. According to a woman, Oludasola who claimed her brother was among the victims, the gunmen were increasing in number and attacking areas close to the creeks. She appealed to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to come to their rescue, stressing that the security agents deployed to the areas were ineffective. “Akinwunmi Ambode or whoever needs to intervene should please act fast. Residents of Ishawo, Ikorodu are not safe. The policemen put there haven’t been effective. My older brother has been kidnapped. I need prayers of everyone please. “This is happening at Ishawo, Agric in Ikorodu. They are increasing in number and attacking areas close to river outlets. It could be another area soon if nothing is done,” she said. Efforts to get additional information from the woman failed as she did not reply messages sent to her inbox. When contacted, the spokesperson for the Lagos police command, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said she was unaware of the incident. “The command is not aware of any kidnapping in Ikorodu on Sunday. No report has been made at the police station. Besides, there is heavy presence of police and soldiers in that area,” she said. thenationonlineng.net/gunmen-abduct-nine-another-ikorodu-raid/

We really have a big issue on our hands here. But I am wondering what these communities themselves are doing to increase the security of their immediate environment? Do they have community vigilantes/Policing groups? Because with the way they are all calling for the government to come to their aid .... they should have known better by now.
