Nigeria: Kwara Lauds BUA's U.S.$300 Million Investment in Lafiaji Sugar Estate
Ilorin — Kwara State Government has commended BUA Group for its $300 million investment in sugar production in Lafiagi, Kwara State, stating that this was a step in the right direction to end the importation of sugar in the country. The governor, Mr. Abdulfatah Ahmed, explained that Nigeria continues to be a large sugar consumer, maintaining that the high consumption rate was largely attributed to the nation's growing population as well as the growth in the food processing sector for which sugar is a major ingredient. He also called on other local and foreign investors to invest in the country's sugar industry to end the importation of the commodity, saying that Nigeria has the capacity to meet its local demand for sugar. He said based on the data made available by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Nigeria's raw sugar imports in 2015 was estimated at about 1.345 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) and is expected to rise to about 1.7mtpa. "This is because of the absence of competitive alternatives to meet the demand for local consumption. "It is rather worrisome, considering the fact that Nigeria is endowed with the manpower, raw materials and an excellent climate to produce enough sugar to meet local demand and of course export," he added. He said it had become necessary to change the narrative on sugar production, "not to only save us from wasting our scarce foreign exchange but also to generate wealth and enhance economic growth". "We have identified agriculture as a major strategy to create wealth and jobs for the youths which we believe will be felt in the medium to long-term. "We are putting the required policies and structures in place for agro-led economic diversification," Ahmed said. The governor, during the inauguration of BUA Group's sugar nursery plantation in Lafiagi, said the sugar sub-sector is important due to its ability to contribute largely to solving unemployment, development of other subsidiary industries, and its significant impact on the rural economy. "I am pleased to be here to inaugurate the 2016 cane planting season which represents another positive step in the nation's resolve to end the importation of sugar in the country and also expand the base of the state's economy," he said. He commended the management of BUA Group for its recent investment in Lafiagi Sugar Company which will produce about 1.5 mtpa and is expected to employ about 6,000 people directly and another 19,000 indirectly. "This investment will significantly reduce youth unemployment in this area and bring more prosperity to the state. "Let me use this opportunity to assure the management of BUA of our maximum cooperation at all times. We pledge to continue to provide a conducive environment to support local and foreign investments in the state," he said. The Executive Director, BUA Group, Mr. Kabiru Rabiu, said BUA was making a total investment of over $300 million in the sugar company estate that would include a sugar mill, refinery, an ethanol and power plant, and would include the agriculture aspects of the project. He added that the plant would produce over 140,000 tonnes of pure refined white sugar, 25 million litres of ethanol and generate over 35 megawatts of electricity using bagasse as feedstock. Bagasse is the dry, fibrous residue left after the extraction of juice from the crushed stalks of sugarcane. "Our planned 500-hectare nursery development is unprecedented in the history of the Nigerian sugar industry. With the achievement of this important milestone, we intend to break yet another record by replanting over 3,000 hectares of land next year," Rabiu said. He added that the company would establish a fully integrated sugar mill with the accompanying refinery that would have the capacity to crush about 7,000 tonnes of cane per day. According to him, the excess power generated by the company would help in reducing the acute shortage of electricity in the state and would be sold to the electricity distribution companies to add to the grid. "Our quest for the industry leadership in the Nigerian sugar space is evidenced by not only our investment in the sector but also by our efficiency. "BUA Sugar Refinery Limited in Lagos scored the highest capacity utilisation among the three refineries in the country in the last two years," he said. He added that the company's desire and commitment to ensure local sugar production in Nigeria also led to the acquisition of 50,000 hectares of land in Bassa, Kogi State for its second sugar plantation. Controversy As Ilorin Emir Disowns Jebba Monarch
The Chairman of the Kwara State Traditional Council, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, has disowned the Oba of Jebba, Alhaji AbdulKadir Alabi Adebara.
Sulu-Gambari, who is the Emir of Ilorin, in a statement by the National Secretary of Shehu Alimi Foundation for Peace and Development, Mallam Abdulazeez Arowona, also said Adebara was impersonating, saying he was claiming to be the Oba of Jebba.
He also stated that the claim that Jebba was not in Ilorin Emirate was untrue.
Reacting to the question of whether Jebba was in the Ilorin Emirate or not, the Emir said this could be confirmed through his lieutenants in persons of the District Head of Lanwa, Alhaji Sa’adu Gambari; the District Head of Ejidongari, Alhaji Issa Oloruntogun; and the District Head of Ipaiye, Alhaji Isiaka Yusuf, all in Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The Jebba community had, in a media briefing, said Sulu-Gambari had refused to come to terms with the reality that Adebara is a third-class graded traditional ruler in Jebba.
The speech, which was read by the Gbobaniyi of Jebba, Chief Jaiyeola Omotosho, was signed by Asoju-Oba of Jebba, Chief Yakubu Ayodele, and Otun-Oba of Jebba, Chief Emmanuel Tytler.
Omotosho said the court had affirmed Adebara as the Oba of Jebba.
He said, “Earler in 1989, in Suit No. KWS/231/89, Saka Adeyemi & 2 Ors Vs Alhaji Laaro Isale Oja & 2 Ors, Justice J.A. Ibiwoye had held that Moro LG was not part of Ilorin Emirate. But the Emir won’t just let go and he has been succeeding, because the political leadership in Kwara State has been aiding and abetting him.
“The bottom line has been the refusal of the Emir of Ilorin to come to terms with the reality of a third-class graded traditional ruler in Jebba, which he considers an aberration in a contraption called Emirate system, even though it has been judicially pronounced that Moro is not under him.”
Omotosho also accused the Deputy Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Mr. Matthew Okedare, of attempting to assassinate Adebara.
He alleged that the deputy speaker recruited and sponsored hoodlums that attacked the Oba after the Eid-el-Fitri prayers on Wednesday, July 6.
According to him, three people died while 12 people received varying degrees of injuries during the attack.
He stated that preliminary investigation revealed that the attackers were allegedly recruited by members of Okedare family, including the Deputy Speaker, Kwara State House of Assembly, Mr. Mathew Okedare; the Clerk, Kwara State House of Assembly, Mr. Simon Okedare; and Principal, Government Secondary School, Jebba, Mr. Kayode Okedare.
But the deputy speaker denied all the allegations against him and his siblings, saying they were politically motivated. He also absolved the Clerk of the state House of Assembly, Simon, of any culpability in the so-called attack.

LOL..... The desperate usurper of Ilorin is trying very hard to cling on to his influence. Because the town of Jebba and its environs has cut the Ilorin emirate which has simply become a fulani elitist enclave in Yorubaland, he wants the Oba of Jebba town to submit to his lordship and start bearing the title Emir. Rubbish.

Adebara is the certified ruler of Jebba town ok..... This crisis has been going on for a long time and there is no doubt that the Adebara are the rightful rulers of Jebba town. The First Oba of Jebba was Adebola Adebara who reign between 1865 to 1900. 2nd King was Odaso Adebara (1901-1930), 3rd King was Oba Muhammad Ayoola Adebara (1931-1943), 4th King was (Alh) Oba Ahmadu Akanbi Adebara who lived on the throne for 60 years (1943-2003) and the present and 5th King is Oba (Alh) Abdulkadir Alabi Adebara (2003-date).

This crisis is not a new one, and the Emir of Ilorin has always tried to suppress the traditional Obaship of Jebba even demoting him to a third class king. At a time he was completely deranked, and didn't even rank in the state. So it's not as if the emir woke u today and just decided to "disown" him... whatever that means, it is even better he is disowned. disowning what was never his in the first place...Iranu. He won't give in anything. He isn't the only Oba in Kwara state, so it's not even like he will be alone in this. Why will he give in.

The Emir is claiming that the Oba of Jebba is under his control, while the Oba of Jebba is asserting his and his peoples' independence from the Ilorin stool which itself is another stooge of Sokoto. So now he is forming "deranking"/"disowning" or whatever. the Emir of Ilorin is the traditional chairman of the Kwara state traditional rulers' council , so that was why he could do that, coupled with state political links and northern backing.

I read somewhere about Kwarans agitating to merge with the SW. That died down.
