Well, Ibadan is a peculiar place in Yorubaland when it comes to the subject of 'Obaship'. The city was founded as a warcamp of sorts for Yoruba warriors that were trying to repel fulani incursion into Yorubaland. Consequently, there was nothing like a 'ruling house' in the conventional sense to begin with, but rather it was ruled by warriors with various titles ranging from Bashorun, Aare ona kakanfo, Baloguns, and Baales. Later the Baale title became the focal title of the paramount ruler of the city. This was later replaced by the 'Olubadan' title in 1936 or thereabout. And it wasn't until 1976 that the Olubadan was allowed to wear a beaded crown like other obas in Yorubaland. It's not the first time (and probably won't be the last) that the modification traditional system of the city would be a subject of controversy. Opinions are split as to the propriety and timing of the governor's actions (the Olubadan's own chiefs/cabinet [called the Olubadan-in-Council] overwhelmingly support the move, with the exception of Rasheed Ladoja, while the Olubadan himself was quoted as saying that his main grouse with the reform is that it's happening under his own tenure as Olubadan). But regardless, for good or bad, the governor has acted within his powers coz traditional rulers are subject to democratically elected governments (same way a governor can be impeached, so also is it possible for Obas to be dethroned, e.g Awo's Action Group dethroned and banished a former Alaafin of Oyo (the present Alaafin of Oyo's father) in 1955. We'll see how the whole thing plays out but I think that the development is already a fait accompli.
